When Sanjay Gandhi entered politics, nobody expected that he would become one of the most talked-about figures in the country within a few years. He was young, had no long political experience and did not hold any constitutional position, yet his influence grew quickly during a very sensitive period in Indian history.

Born on December 14, 1946, in New Delhi, Sanjay Gandhi was the younger son of Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi. He grew up in a family where politics was part of everyday life. His grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India and his mother later became one of the country’s most powerful political leaders.

While Rajiv Gandhi initially stayed away from politics and worked as a pilot, Sanjay developed an interest in public affairs much earlier. He wanted to bring changes through quick decisions and believed that India needed major reforms to deal with its social and economic problems.

His political journey began through the Indian National Congress during the early 1970s. He became active in the Youth Congress and soon created his own support base among young party workers.

Growing influence inside Congress

Sanjay Gandhi’s entry changed the working style of the Youth Congress. He encouraged younger people to join politics and wanted the organization to become more active among ordinary citizens.

Many young workers were attracted to his approach because he spoke about development, discipline and faster implementation of government plans. He believed that political organizations needed fresh faces and new ideas.

However, his increasing influence also created criticism. Several leaders questioned his methods and felt that he was gaining power without being accountable through an elected position. His supporters saw him as a leader who was ready to take difficult decisions. His opponents accused him of interfering in government matters and using his closeness to the Prime Minister for political advantage.

The Emergency period and rise in power

The period of Emergency from 1975 to 1977 became the most important phase of Sanjay Gandhi’s political career. During this time, the government restricted several democratic activities and faced criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups.

Although Sanjay Gandhi was not a minister or an elected representative, his influence increased considerably. Many government programmes during this period were connected with his ideas.

He focused on issues such as population growth, urban planning and increasing discipline among government departments. He believed that India needed strict measures to solve long-term problems. But several decisions taken during this period became controversial. The criticism against him increased because many people felt that the government was ignoring public opinion while implementing these programmes.

The family planning drive and public anger

India’s growing population was a major concern during the 1970s. The government believed that family planning was necessary for economic development and improving living standards. Sanjay Gandhi strongly supported population control measures. A large sterilisation campaign was carried out during the Emergency years.

The objective of reducing population growth was supported by many policymakers at that time, but the method used became a major issue. In many parts of the country, officials were accused of forcing people to undergo sterilisation.

Reports of pressure tactics created anger among common people. The campaign became one of the biggest reasons behind criticism of Sanjay Gandhi and the Emergency government. The issue continued to affect the image of the Congress after the Emergency ended and became a major topic during the 1977 general elections.

Delhi slum clearance programme

Another major initiative linked with Sanjay Gandhi was the slum clearance programme in Delhi. The plan was aimed at removing overcrowded settlements and developing better housing facilities. At the government level, the programme was presented as part of urban improvement. The idea was to create planned areas with better roads, sanitation and living conditions.

However, many residents opposed the way the programme was carried out. Several families claimed that they were removed from their homes without proper rehabilitation.

The demolition of settlements in areas such as Turkman Gate became one of the most criticised incidents of that period. For many critics, the programme showed how development plans could create problems when the concerns of affected people were ignored.

The Maruti project and questions over influence

Apart from politics, Sanjay Gandhi had an interest in automobile manufacturing. He wanted to produce a small and affordable car that could be used by Indian families. In the 1970s, he started the Maruti project with the aim of creating an Indian car company. At that time, the automobile market in India was limited and vehicles were mostly expensive.

The project attracted attention because it was connected with the son of the Prime Minister. Questions were raised about the way government approvals, land and other facilities were provided. Opposition leaders accused the government of giving special treatment to Sanjay Gandhi. They alleged that political influence was used to help the project move forward.

The project faced difficulties in its early years, but after later developments it became part of Maruti Udyog Limited. The company eventually changed the automobile market in India and became one of the country’s biggest car manufacturers.

His role in changing the Congress

Sanjay Gandhi wanted the Congress party to change with changing times. He believed that young leaders should get more opportunities and that the party needed a stronger connection with ordinary people.

Through the Youth Congress, he promoted young workers and tried to create a new generation of political leaders. At the same time, his aggressive style created disagreements within the party. Some senior leaders were uncomfortable with the amount of influence he had gained in a short period.

His political strength was closely linked with his relationship with Indira Gandhi. Many people believed that his position became powerful because he was the Prime Minister’s son, while his supporters argued that he had built a separate identity through his work.

Interest in development and environment

Supporters of Sanjay Gandhi often point towards his focus on development-related issues. He believed that India needed rapid changes in areas such as population management, agriculture, urban planning and environmental protection.

He encouraged tree plantation programmed and spoke about protecting forests and wildlife. At a time when environmental concerns were not a major part of political discussions, he showed interest in issues related to nature conservation.

He also supported ideas related to skill development and youth participation. He believed that India’s young population could play an important role in the country’s progress. However, the way some of his programmed were implemented remained a major point of debate. For many critics, the problem was not only the policies but also the methods used to achieve them.

The final years of Sanjay Gandhi’s political journey

By the time the Emergency ended in 1977, Sanjay Gandhi had become a familiar name across India. However, the public anger against the Emergency and its policies had a major impact on the Congress party.

The 1977 general elections resulted in a major defeat for the Congress. Indira Gandhi lost power for the first time and the Janata Party formed the government at the Centre.

Sanjay Gandhi also faced political difficulties after the election. Several investigations were started into decisions taken during the Emergency period. His role in government policies became a subject of criticism and political attacks.

Despite the setback, he did not leave politics. When Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1980 after the collapse of the Janata Party government, Sanjay Gandhi again became an important figure within the Congress. He started working on rebuilding the party organisation and strengthening the Youth Congress. Many believed that he was preparing for a larger role in national politics.

Some Congress leaders saw him as a possible future leader of the party. There was also speculation that he could eventually take a bigger position in the government. His political journey, however, ended suddenly.

Sanjay Gandhi’s death in a plane crash

On June 23, 1980, Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. He was 33 years old. At the time of the accident, Sanjay Gandhi was flying a Pitts S-2A aircraft. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff. He was accompanied by a professional aviation activity and the accident shocked the country.

The exact reason behind the crash remained a matter of discussion. Some reports pointed towards possible pilot error while others raised questions about technical issues. However, no single reason was officially accepted as the final cause.

News of his death spread quickly and created a wave of shock among his supporters and within the Congress party. For Indira Gandhi, the loss was a major personal and political setback. Thousands of people gathered during his funeral. Many supporters remembered him as a young leader with energy and ambition who had been expected to play a bigger role in Indian politics.

Impact on the Nehru-Gandhi family

Sanjay Gandhi’s death changed the direction of the Nehru-Gandhi family’s political journey. Before his death, he was considered the main political successor within the family. After his death, Rajiv Gandhi entered politics. Rajiv had earlier stayed away from political life and worked as a pilot with Indian Airlines. The circumstances changed after Sanjay’s death. At Indira Gandhi’s request, Rajiv Gandhi joined the Congress and gradually became active in party affairs.

Following Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. His entry into politics was largely influenced by the gap created after Sanjay Gandhi’s death.

Different views about Sanjay Gandhi’s legacy

The public opinion about Sanjay Gandhi remains divided even decades after his death. His supporters describe him as a young leader who wanted to bring quick changes in the country. They point towards his interest in issues such as population control, urban planning, environmental protection and youth participation. According to them, he wanted government programmes to move faster and produce visible results.

His critics, however, focus on the controversial aspects of his political career. They argue that several decisions taken during the Emergency ignored democratic values and individual rights. The forced sterilisation campaign and slum clearance programme continue to be the biggest points of criticism against him. Many historians consider these events important examples of the problems that can arise when government decisions are implemented without enough public consultation.

A political figure remembered for both ambition and controversy

Sanjay Gandhi’s political career lasted for less than a decade, but his influence during that period was significant. He entered politics at a young age and quickly became one of the most powerful figures in the country.

His supporters saw him as someone who wanted to modernise India and bring new ideas into politics. His critics viewed him as a symbol of excessive power during the Emergency. His life reflected the complexities of Indian politics in the 1970s. He represented a generation of leaders who wanted rapid change but his methods and decisions remained subjects of debate.

Even after more than four decades since his death, discussions about Sanjay Gandhi continue whenever India’s political history of the Emergency period is examined. His story remains connected with a time when the country witnessed major changes, strong political battles and debates over the balance between development and democracy.
